Blue Lily/Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea), Crushed Flowers.
Product Description and History:

The blue lily (also known inaccurately as "blue lotus") was sacred to the ancient Egyptians, who steeped it in wine to make a relaxing euphoric drink conducive to meditation or intimate gatherings with friends. However, the amazing properties of the lily were forgotten for a long time, and rediscovered only quite recently by researchers wondering about the various depictions of the lily in Egyptian wall paintings. One contemporary blue lily enthusiast wrote of its effects: "There is a feeling of joy that permeates the whole body, emanating from each cell".

Typically, half an ounce of blue lily is steeped in 750 ml of red wine for several hours, preferably for a couple of days, and then is filtered out. The lily also makes a great tea to unwind at the end of a busy day; use one tablespoon each of lily and chamomile per cup of hot water.

IL-01. Ilumina Liqueur Kit. Your price: $30.
Product Description and History:

Upon drinking the delicious ruby-red Ilumina liqueur, one enters a world of dreamy illumination, like drifting through a joyous waking dream. The effects of this precious drink are nothing short of magical.

Typically, herbs were steeped in 500 ml pure alcohol or a clear high-proof liquor (at least 100 proof) for a couple of days, then filtered out, and the resulting mixture was distilled to yield a clear, tasteless yet strongly aromatic liquid. This distillate contains volatile essential oils of herbs, in particular, thujone (essential oil of wormwood). Next, other herbs were steeped in the distillate for a few days to "color" it, then filtered out. Finally, the resulting liquid was mixed with 200 ml dark creme de cacao, 200 ml very dry sherry, and a little dark rum according to taste. Ilumina liqueur was enjoyed by itself sipped slowly or mixed with desserts such as ice cream, hot chocolate, chocolate cream liqueur, or fruit cakes. The drink combines exceptionally well with kratom (see KR-01 below).

We are happy to provide you with you our very own prized liqueur creation: Ilumina liqueur. Our Ilumina Liqueur Kit includes two packets: distillate herbs and coloring herbs. The distillate packet contains: wormwood, lemon balm, aniseed, angelica root, chamomile, and nutmeg. The coloring packet contains: blue lily flowers, red poppy (Papaver rhoeas) flowers, sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) stamens, almonds, and spearmint. (Note: This product is sold as a herbal specimen for archival or decorative use only. Not for consumption. Distillation may be illegal without a license in your country of residence.)

Les Nuages Herbal Tea is a mellow, inspiring blend of blue lily, red poppy, chamomile, lemon balm, Artemisia capillaris, hibiscus, and sage (Salvia officinalis). It was often drunk as an alcohol-free addition to kratom or kava, whose effects it nicely potentiates. To their relaxing properties, Les Nuages adds a calm, dreamy stimulation. Alone, it also makes an uplifting euphoric tea with especially soothing properties. Typically, one tablespoon of Les Nuages tea in a teaball was steeped in very hot water for five minutes or more.

FO-01. Les Fleurs de l'Oubli Herbal Tea Blend: 30 grams Your price: $20.
Product Description and History:

Les Fleurs de l'Oubli is a dual-purpose herbal tea blend that is simple but quite effective. It contains only three ingredients: blue lily (Nymphaea caerulea) flowers, chamomile flowers, and sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) stamens. This blend can be used as an ordinary hot tea (one tablespoon per cup). Try it as an iced tea with a little honey for a refreshing drink or a base for cocktails. It can also be used as a liqueur kit, and blends especially well with brandy. Steep the herbs for a week in liquor, then filter them out and enjoy a blissful nectar that Ulysses's men might have sipped on that island of the lotus-eaters. Like all our teas, this one combines very well with kratom.

XO-01. Xochiquetzal/Xochipili Liqueur Kit. Your price: $25.
Product Description and History:

The euphoric soothing quality of this liqueur is due to a special blend of blue lily and red poppy flowers, chamomile, and nutmeg. Xochipili is the Aztec god of the feast and the dance (among other things), and Xochiquetzal is his wife.

Typically, the herbs were steeped in 500 ml. high-proof liquor such as brandy or rum. For Xochiquetzal liqueur, a small amount (for example, 250 ml) of creme de cacao or cacao liquor was added to the high-proof liquor; for Xochipili, coffee liqueur (e.g., Kahlua) and sherry were added instead of cacao. Honey and a few drops of vanilla extract to taste were also added to the mixture. Finally, the herbs were filtered out after a couple of days. Subsequent filtrations--such as with a coffee filter--may be applied to minimize the amount of sediment. The drink combines remarkably well with kratom (see KR-01 below).

Enjoy this great-tasting liqueur by itself sipped slowly or mixed with desserts such as ice cream and butterscotch schnapps. Our Xochiquetzal/Xochipili Liqueur Kit contains: blue lily and red poppy flowers, chamomile, nutmeg, lemon balm, spearmint, cinnamon, and Tazo Passion tea (ingredients: hibiscus flowers, citric acid, licorice root, orange peel, cinnamon, rose hips, lemongrass, red poppy flowers, and natural tropical flavors).

GR-01. Grito de la Selva (Cry of the Jungle) Wine Kit. Your price: $16.
Product Description and History:

Grito de la Selva (Cry of the Jungle) Wine was inspired by a new herbal wine called Sangre de la Selva (Blood of the Jungle) that is already becoming a bestseller in Southern Mexico, where it was invented. Grito de la Selva, our improvement over the popular Sangre wine, has a luscious tart sweet taste and wonderful fragrance. Add to this the uplifting effects of blue lily, the hypotensive properties of hibiscus, and the healthy stimulation of Cat's Claw (Uncaria tormentosa) and you have an unforgettable drink that will be the talk of your parties!

To make Grito, typically the herbs were steeped in a 750 ml bottle of red wine for a day or two, and then filtered out. It's easy as that!

Our Grito de la Selva kit contains blue lily flowers, hibiscus flowers, Cat's Claw bark, Tazo Passion tea (ingredients: hibiscus flowers, citric acid, licorice root, orange peel, cinnamon, rose hips, lemongrass, red poppy flowers, and natural tropical flavors), licorice root, and angelica root.

AB-01. Deluxe Absinthe with Blue Lily Kit. Your price: $35.
Product Description and History:

Absinthe was the favorite drink of such creative personalities as Verlaine, Rimbaud, and van Gogh. Its main active ingredient besides alcohol is thujone (essential oil of wormwood), which adds a pleasantly stimulating and euphoric quality to the liquor. Its production has been banned in France and the US for almost a century now, but it still remains legal in Spain, the Czech Republic, the UK, Germany, Japan, and other countries. Indeed recently, Switzerland has repealed its long-standing ban on absinthe.

Typically, herbs were steeped in pure alcohol or a clear high-proof (at least 100 proof) liquor for a couple of days, then filtered out, and the resulting mixture was distilled to yield a clear, tasteless yet strongly aromatic liquid. This distillate contains volatile essential oils of herbs, in particular, thujone. Next, other herbs were steeped in the distillate for a few days to "color" it, then filtered out to yield the finished product. Some inferior (and very bitter) "absinthes" skipped the distillation step and simply steeped all the herbs at once and filtered them out at the end. Absinthe was enjoyed in a delightful ritual by mixing a shot with about four shots of water dripped slowly over a sugar cube.

Our Deluxe Absinthe with Blue Lily kit makes a liter of delicious, only slightly bitter Swiss-style absinthe with the added potency of blue lily (Nymphaea caerulea). Certainly, if the 19th-century Europeans had known of the blue lily, they would have included it in their absinthe. In taste and aroma, absinthe with blue lily is practically indistinguishable from original absinthe. Yet the effects of the former are so much more pleasurable than the latter alone.

Our Deluxe Absinthe with Blue Lily Kit includes two packets: distillate herbs and coloring herbs. The distillate packet contains: wormwood, hyssop, calamus root, lemon balm, aniseed, fennel seed, star anise, coriander seed, nutmeg, and chamomile. The coloring packet contains: blue lily flowers, spearmint, lemon balm, wormwood, and licorice root. (Note: This product is sold as a herbal specimen for archival or decorative use only. Not for consumption. Distillation may be illegal without a license in your country of residence.)

SG-01. Deluxe Swedish Glogg with Blue Lily Kit. Your price: $18.
Product Description and History:

Glogg is a warm, spicy-sweet and potent Swedish holiday drink that is also popular in some parts of the US. Our delicious glogg comes with the extra soothing effect of blue lily, and will warm you up on the coldest nights.

To make glogg, the contents of the spice packet are added to two cups of orange juice in a pot. The mixture is brought to a light boil and simmered for 45 minutes. 750 ml of port wine is added and heated until beginning to simmer. A small optional amount of brandy or vodka to taste is added and the mixture is further heated until warm (do not boil). Remove from heat, filter the herbs out, and bottle. Next, add the contents of the blue lily packet and let steep for at least one day. Finally, filter the lily out and enjoy the glogg slightly warmed.

Our Deluxe Swedish Glogg with Blue Lily Kit includes two packets: a spice packet and a blue lily packet. The spice packet contains: almonds, raisins, prunes, cloves, cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, and brown sugar. The blue lily packet contains 1/2 ounce of blue lily (Nymphaea caerulea).

Premium Commercial Kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa).
Product Description and History:

Our premium commercial kratom is of the highest quality, and consists mostly of crushed leaves with only a small amount of stems and veins.

Kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa) is a tree originating from Southeast Asia. It has been used there for its stimulant, analgesic, relaxant, and anti-fever properties for thousands of years. Low doses are generally stimulating, while large doses tend to be relaxing and euphoric.

Legal since time immemorial, kratom was a casualty of World War II, when the Thai puppet government under Japanese occupation banned it to detract public attention from the oppressive regime. This foolish prohibition set a legal precedent, and a few nearby countries followed suit. Fortunately, kratom is legal in most of the world, and we hope its somewhat tarnished reputation will eventually be repaired as more people come to know this plant and its useful properties.

Kratom is an excellent accompaniment to many liqueurs or elixirs. In particular, Ilumina liqueur was combined with kratom for a truly memorable and relaxing experience.

Typically, 1/8 to 1/4 ounce of premium commercial kratom leaf was lightly boiled in water for 20 minutes to yield a mug of kratom tea. The leaves can be boiled again to give a weaker tea. The tea by itself is rather bitter, but we at Ilumina Botanicals have found that boiling a cinnamon stick in water together with kratom, and then sweetening the liquid with honey, results in a very delicious beverage. Alternatively, the leaves can be finely powdered in a coffee grinder, and then used in capsules, mixed in a milkshake, or spooned with honey as a slurry. If one is new to kratom, it is recommended that he or she start with a low dose.

For more information on this fascinating herb, see The Kratom User's Guide. (Note: Please use responsibly and in moderation. We recommend not using kratom more than twice a week. Persons with a history of heart disease or chronic hypertension should not use kratom. Do not drive or operate machinery while using kratom. Avoid using kratom in social situations. Remember, kratom's continued legality depends on the public and government's perception of kratom users.)

Red Poppy (Papaver rhoeas) Crushed Flowers
Product Description and History:

Red poppy flowers have been used in the Old World for millenia as a mild sedative and hypnotic. More recently, red poppy has been mixed with blue lily (Nymphaea caerulea) in liqueurs for enhanced euphoric-relaxing effects. Red poppy-based teas and liqueurs also go quite well with kratom (see KR-01 above), whose effects they improve and strengthen.

Incidentally, the now very popular kratom-red poppy combination was discovered in 2003 by one of the herbalists here at Ilumina Botanicals--a discovery, in the words of one enthusiast, worthy of the "Entheogen Award" of the year.

Our red poppy is sourced from a new supplier, and consists of top-quality, clean and fragrant flowers. Try a teaspoon of this herb in a tea along with similar amounts of blue lily and chamomile the next time you have your kratom.

Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) Root
Product Description and History:

The lotus flower is held to be sacred in the Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Like the blue lily, it is an aquatic plant. Unlike the lily, whose petals touch the water, the lotus blossoms well above the water's surface; hence, it is a symbol of purity and regeneration.

Many people believe that the lotus was the plant (of Homer's Odyssey) given to Ulysses's men to induce forgetfulness and indolent bliss. N. nucifera has mild yet quite pleasant sedative and narcotic properties. It is best taken as a tea, and is excellent in combination with blue lily, kratom, and other relaxing herbs. As a rule of thumb, use one to three lotus root pieces per cup of hot water.

Our sacred lotus root pieces are of the highest quality, imported from some of China's premier herb facilities.

Raw Cacao (Theobroma cacao) Beans.
Product Description and History:

Cacao (chocolate) was a revered "food of the gods" of the ancient Mexicans and Maya, who esteemed the beans for their euphoric and energizing properties. Nowadays in the West, chocolate is seen as an innocent dessert, and is consumed in a highly-processed form that has lost much of the original potency. Raw cacao is still the best way to appreciate the full psychoactivity and health benefits of the legendary bean. Cacao contains theobromine (a stimulant), anadamine (a brain lipid associated with blissful feelings), a little caffeine, and is packed with antioxidants.

Our organic raw cacao beans can be enjoyed with milk chocolate or as a base for shakes, and are terrific in combination with kratom (see KR-01 above).

KG-03. Kaempferia Galanga Root Powder: 3 ounces. Your price: $10.
Product Description and History:

This is the intriguing Kaempferia galanga rhizome of Plants of the Gods (by Schultes, et al.) fame. It is similar in flavor and aroma to its famous cousin, Alpinia galanga, used liberally as a ginger-like spice in Thai and other Southeast Asian cuisines. Hence, K. galanga can be used sparingly in cooking like A. galanga.

K. galanga is reportedly used in large doses as a mild visionary herb and euphoriant in New Guinea, apparently with no ill effects (PG, 2nd ed., p. 46). Probably originating in South China, K. galanga is a bona fide Chinese medicinal herb, and is taken as an expectorant and carminative, and to alleviate sore throat, inflammation, and rheumatism. It is also employed as a spice, stimulant, and aphrodisiac in many Asian countries.

We at Ilumina Botanicals discovered (in Summer 2005) that K. galanga complements the kratom experience extremely well, yielding wonderfully relaxing and calming effects. For this purpose, one to three tablespoons of root powder can be taken with kratom. Not for sale in Louisiana.

Tips on Making Herbal Liqueurs, Wines and Elixirs

Where high-proof (at least 100 proof) liquor is to be used, use as strong a liquor as you can obtain, preferably 195 proof. It is best to let the herbs steep for at least a week (unless otherwise instructed by the recipe) and shake the liquid at least once a day. When filtering out the herbs, first use a fine wire mesh, and remember to press them well to release the liquid. Herbal liqueurs, wines, and elixirs benefit from a second finer filtration with a coffee filter or similar device. The most important thing is to have fun while you make the stuff and think about the cleaning-up later!
